Charlie Jones
Director of Bands

Charlie Jones is in his 36th year serving as a public school band director. He is in his fifth year as band director at Greenwood High School. A native of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mr. Jones has served as band director at several schools throughout his career, including: Myrtle Beach High and Junior High (1971-1972), Hanahan High and Middle School (1974-1980), Clinton High School (1981-1992), Emerald Junior High School (1993), Emerald High School and Brewer Middle School in Greenwood (1994), Brewer Middle School (1995-2002), and Greenwood High School (2002-present). He received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from East Carolina University in 1971 and his Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in 1973. While at USC, Mr. Jones served as Graduate Assistant with Carolina Band and taught brass pedagogy.
During Mr. Jones' tenure as Director at Greenwood High School the Marching Band has increased in membership from 55 members in 2002 to 106 members in 2006. The Marching Band has been a consistent AAAA State Championship Finalist in each of those years. The Symphonic Band has earned Superior Ratings at Dixie Classic Festivals in Richmond, Virginia (2003); St. Louis, Missouri (2004); and Washington D.C. (2006); as well as a Fiesta-Val Festival in New York City (2005). The Symphonic Band has also earned Superior and Excellent ratings at the SCBDA State Concert Band Festival.
Mr. Jones is a member of the South Carolina Band Director's Association and has performed as a trombonist with the Emerald City Jazz, the Lander Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, and the Emerald City Brass. His wife Carol also attended East Carolina University and the University of South Carolina and is a retired public school Choral Director. She most recently was the Choral Director at Newberry High School. They have one son, Trey, 26, who graduated from Winthrop University in 2005 as a trombone major with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree. Trey now works as the Band Director at Gray Court and Hickory Tavern Middle Schools and assists with the Laurens High School Band.

 

Chris Turner
Director of Bands

Chris Turner is currently serving in his second year as a public school band director. A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Mr. Turner attended Chapman High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Lander University. He was a member of the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps (1998), and the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps (2001). He has been a percussion clinician with several schools including: Dorman HS, Mauldin HS, Greenwood HS, Ware Shoals HS, Laurens HS, Wade Hampton HS, Batesburg-Leesville HS, and Tift County HS in Georgia.
He has performed with the Lander University Wind Ensemble, the Lander University Singers, Greenville Symphony, Spartanburg Community Band, Greenwood Festival Chorale, and the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg Orchestra.
His professional affiliations include: the Percussive Arts Society, the South Carolina Band Director's Association, the Music Educator's National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
